Eduard Isaac Asser
View of the start of Reguliersbreestraat, c. 1853
Salted-paper print from wet-collodion glass negative, gold-tinted and wax-covered
Eduard Asser lived all his life in the family home on Amsterdam’s Singel canal, near the Mint tower, on the side of today’s flower market. From his home he could see the start of Reguliersbreestraat. Left, between the houses, was the River Amstel. This was a view Asser photographed several times. This print was made using the collodion process, after which it was covered with a glossy protective layer. As in many of his views of the city, there are no people in Asser’s photo. A deserted market stall can be seen on the bridge and a couple of sacks lie forlorn on the street in front of the corner house. With his other 25 city scenes, Asser’s pictures provide the earliest photographic record of Amsterdam.
